St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers is offering a paddlesports safety and rescue training on the weekend of August 15-16. Paddlers may sign up to take the class on either August 15th or August 16th. The training will be held at Madrid Municipal Park, Madrid, NY from 9:00am to 4:00pm with a 1-hour break for lunch. Each day will be limited to 10 paddlers. There is a $15 course fee payable in advance to hold your reservation. Reservations are on a first come-first served basis. Don't miss this fun, learning opportunity!

We will be following the Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) Paddlesport Safety & Rescue traing course. The training will be conducted by Steven Maynard, Head of Paddlesports and Outdoor Living Skills with the Adventure Sports and Expeditionary Studies department at SUNY Plattsburgh, and assisted by John Ozard, Paddle UK Canoe and Kayak Coach. We will cover self and assisted rescues for canoes, kayaks, pack boats and standup paddleboards.

You may download the Paddle UK Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Sample Program and Session Plan (PDF) and Skills Competency Checklist (PDF) to give you an idea of what will be covered. This will be a fun day of learning how you can paddle safer and how to assist other paddlers in case of a swim!

Weather: rain or shine - dress for immersion and bring spare clothes to change into! Bring the canoe, kayak, pack boat or standup paddleboard you use most frequently, life jacket, safety equipment you carry on paddles, and a leash (for standup paddleboards). There are restrooms on site in Madrid Municipal Park.
