North Country Women's Paddlesports Club

Our mission is to celebrate, strengthen, and sustain women’s paddlesports in the North Country. Based in Canton, New York, and inspired by the connected waterways of the Grasse, Little, Oswegatchie, Raquette, and St. Lawrence Rivers, the Club supports women and girls in canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding through community engagement, mentoring, fundraising, and access to training and equipment. We foster an inclusive, empowering environment where paddlers of all experience levels can build confidence, develop technical skills, and form meaningful connections on and off the water. Through stewardship and education, we honor the cultural and ecological significance of our local lakes and waterways, and we encourage lifelong participation in paddlesports throughout the region. The North Country Women’s Paddlesports Club, formed in 2026, is a new initiative of St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers, Inc.
The Club builds on a local legacy of women on the water, dating back to the 1930s, when women participated in St. Lawrence University's Women's Canoe Regatta on the Grasse River in Canton.

I didn’t start paddling because I thought I’d race, travel long distances, or undertake remote expeditions—I got into it because it felt good to move across water under my own power and go where not everyone else was going. What I’ve found has been so much more than I expected.
Kayaking and canoeing have a way of meeting you exactly where you are. Some days it’s quiet and meditative, other days it’s challenging and energizing. Over time, what’s kept me coming back isn’t just the miles or the goals—it’s the sense of connection. To the water, to the landscape, and especially to the people.
The paddling community is one of the most welcoming, generous groups I’ve ever experienced. There’s a shared understanding that we all started somewhere, and that growth—whether it’s your first stroke or your ten-thousandth mile—is worth celebrating. It is a group of people who know getting to the finish line likely involves tripping over a few roots, whether those stumbles are broken rudders, trick knees acting up, worries about kids, losing stability in the wind and ‘swimming’. This community is available to everyone – students, men, women, kids. You’ll see toddlers through octogenarians at races. No special strength is required and techniques can be learned by all. I’ve been encouraged, supported, and inspired by other paddlers at every stage, and that’s something I try to pass on whenever I can.
Through racing, long-distance journeys, and challenging environments, I’ve learned that paddling isn’t about proving something—it’s about discovering what’s possible. It builds confidence in a quiet, steady way. It teaches resilience, patience, and trust in yourself. It is a way of becoming one with your whole self: body, mind, spirit in connection with nature.
If you’re thinking about trying it, you don’t need to have it all figured out. My first paddle race was with 2 two year olds and included a potty break, tears and lots of giggling. You don’t need to be fast or experienced. You can paddle solo or with partners. It’s a sport all can enjoy at any level of ability. You just need to be willing to get on the water and see where it takes you. There’s a place for you here.
