Big Brother is watching!

The NYS DEC has enacted a new regulation which you may (or, may not) wish to read about. In a nutshell, all persons in any craft less than 21 feet in length (yes, including canoes and kayaks) on any waters between 1 November and May Day (1 May -- not the old distress term) MUST be wearing an approved personal flotation device or be subject to a ($100.00) fine.

Participants in the April 2010 SLVP Scrambles and Little River Ramble are reminded that this DEC law applies to them.

Canton Canoe Weekend's 2009 fundraiser raffle netted $400 and four boxes of donated food which was split between the Canton Neighborhood Center and Church and Community Center's food pantries. Brian Baxter and Shari Wilcox are the respective directors. Chuck Bolesh, Chairperson of Canton Canoe Weekend makes the presentation.

The 2010 Canton Canoe Weekend fundraiser will begin soon. Support from local and regional businesses is critical for the success of the event and the raffle fundraiser.

50th Canton Canoe Weekend in 2011

In May 2010 the Rushton Memorial Races and Canton Canoe Weekend will be 49 years old. We are beginning to plan for a gala 50th, May 7 & 8, 2011.

Your suggestions and help are welcome to plan for the 50th!!

Do you have old programs or pictures?
Stories to tell?

Do you know one of the original participants or organizers? Are you one of the original organizers or racers? Would you be willing to share your stories about the early Rushton Races?

Do you have an original Rushton canoe or boat that you'd be willing to display?
Or the canoe you raced in an early Rushton Race?

Would you be willing to paddle the original course from Pyrites to Canton?
Would you help organize and run it?
Would you help with river safety during the event?

Original 5-mile course event: Friday evening.

Would you have or host activities at Taylor Park or on Willow Island in Canton?

What educational and fun activities would you suggest for the 50th Rushton Races at the May 7 & 8, 2011 Canton Canoe Weekend?
