Paddling Trips
2020 November 9 - St. Regis  River, Santa Clara, NY

On Monday November 9, 2020 three St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers launched from the NYSDEC Santa Clara Flow Water Access to explore the St. Regis River. It was a beautiful day with air temperatures reaching the low 70’s F. We paddled four and a half miles upstream before taking a short break for lunch.

After lunch we continued exploring upstream for another one-half mile before returning to the launch for a trip total of 10 miles. Muskrat lodges were observed along the way as well as beaver lodges. We paddled by several active beaver lodges with well-stocked feed beds for the winter months ahead. The only mammal sighted was a river otter (or three?) that surprised us as we came around a bend in the river. Bird observations were plentiful and included common merganser, goldeneye, and bufflehead ducks, several lesser yellowlegs, a raven, an eagle, a rough-legged hawk (unusual for this time of year), and a pair of Canada jays who visited us at our lunch stop.
