Wednesday Duathlon Series

The new “race” series sponsored by SLVP will feature events geared to local runners and paddlers. There will be two races in the series, held on the 3rd Thursdays of July and August, July 16 and August 20. The run-canoe/kayak-run event will take less than an hour to complete and can be done solo or as a team event using the woods and field trail at SLU and the Little River from the boat launch at the wooden bridge on the Russell Rd, CR 27. Start time is 5:30pm.

Event coordinator Steve Coffin and the St. Lawrence Valley committee discussed the event at the June 25 meeting. While scheduling of the event they took into consideration the Norwood Duathlon Series (run-bike-run) and the Summer Sunset Series (run) in Canton. The intent is for the SLVP Duathlons to compliment these other summer events. The SLVP Duathlon will start with a one (1) mile run, followed by a two (2) mile canoe/kayak and finish with a one (1) mile run. The canoe/kayak leg can be done in any paddle craft: solo or tandem kayak or solo or tandem canoe. More than two persons can be in a canoe; i.e. families, or if the canoe is designed for 3 or more paddlers. The duathlon can be done solo or as a team event.

For further information contact Steve Coffin at jigsawsc@yahoo.com , 393-3686. Information will also be available at www.slvpaddlers.org , the local radio stations and newspapers and in the SLVP Summer Flyer.

Try a Boat Night

St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers hosts a weekly fun paddle every Wednesday throughout the summer. The July 9 gathering has been designated as the annual “Try A Boat Night”. Local paddlers and would be paddlers are encouraged to come and try out different boats. The boats that will be available range from recreational canoes to marathon race boats, both solo and tandem as well as C-4 (4 person) and War Canoes (6 or more paddlers). They hope to have a range of kayaks available, primarily solo, entry level touring through marathon kayaks. For information contact Gene Newman at 386-2577. The gathering begins at 5:30.

Learn to Paddle

The Canton Recreation Department and St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers will host a learn-to-paddle event for local youth and adults during the week of July 28-Aug 1. Classes will be held at Taylor Park in Canton from 6:00-7:30. Canoes, kayaks and PFD’s will be available or participants may use their own. 2008 Entry Fee Increase

Due to continued increases in insurance fees we have made the decision that we must increase entry fees to all SLVP races. For a number of years, we have subsidized the races with fundraising through sponsors and advertising and have exceeded the limit of our ability to procure those funds. The burden of unreasonable insurance fees must now be passed on to you the paddlers.

youth $5 (promoting youth paddling - no increase)
Military and Veterans $15
Military and Veteran SLVP members $10
SLVP members $15 (increased from $12)
Non-members $20 (increased from $15)
C-1, C-2 & K-1 PRO $30 (increased from $25)

2008 Membership Dues Increase

Membership dues have remained at $10 Individual and $15 Family since the club was formed in 1999. Club members receive the newsletter as well as reduced entry fees at SLVP events, in 2008, the reduced entry fee will be a $30 value.

2008 membership fees effective February 1
$15 individual and $20 family

Support SLVP's Raffle and win this photo of canoes in the Adirondack Canoe Classic coming down Long Lake, approaching the bridge. It is 16x20, matted and framed.
Value: $150 donated by Joanne Kennedy, Call of the Loon.

The first place prize in the raffle is a "Peeper" canoe from GRB Newman Designs. The Peeper is designed specifically for recreational use. Whether it’s scouting streams, winding creeks, or navigating those obscure Adirondack lakes the peeper will take you there. Weighing in at 15 pounds (less than two gallons of water) makes this boat easy to manage out of the water but combined with its maneuverability and stability this boat ideal for beginner paddlers. The Peeper is a fun boat to paddle no matter your level of experience.
