AWARDED FOR VOLUNTEER EFFORTS

In 2000, the Canton Canoe Weekend community lost a long time friend and volunteer worker, Steve Huczel. For over 10 years Steve had worked in every aspect of the weekend’s races doing all that was asked of him and much more without being asked. Steve was the ideal volunteer, quiet, helpful, tireless and there.

In 2001, the organizing committee instituted the "Steve Huczel Award" recognizing outstanding effort by a volunteer(s). The award recognizes outstanding efforts for a number of years. Past recipients are:
2001- Jack Duffany
2002- Judy Huczel
2003- Marlene Thompson & Dick Miller
2004- Holly Huczel
2005- Rob & CathyJo Brown
2006- Heath Huczel
2007- Cathy Giglio
2008- Kerry Newell
The Canton Canoe Weekend committee is proud to recognize Carole Moreau as the 2009 recipient of this award. Carole has for many years volunteered her time to help during Sunday’s events. When asked to help the expected and given answer is “yes, what time”. Prior to the race she encourages students and offers extra credit to those who participate. Carole is an important part of the race day staff who makes it all work. She has soft words and smiles to all as she goes about her tasks sets and important tone for the day. Like Steve Huczel, she is the ideal volunteer.

Canton Food Patries benefit from the local canoe races.
Local businesses donated items for the raffle and all proceeds went directly to two food pantries. Many racers also donated food items which also were delivered along with the checks.
Director Shari Wilcox receives a check for the Church & Community Worker food pantry from Race chairperson Chuck Bolesh. Director Brian Baxter of the Canton Neighborhood Center also received funds from the CCW raffle.
